I remember the church service when we were singing Amazing Grace. As I thought of other times I had sung that song, I felt transported back in time.
I realized those around me were having the same experience. We were all time travelers, traveling back in time. We were together at that moment and yet going to separate places and times at the same time.
And then I thought of John Newton, who wrote Amazing Grace. He himself was a time traveler, even though he did not know it.
He wrote the words in 1772, never dreaming that generations to follow would still be singing it all the way to 2022.
Music allows us not only to travel, but also to share the ride with others, past, present and future.
When I sing the old hymns, I remember times I sang them with my parents. I feel their presence, and I know they are joining in the song from heaven at that very moment. It is more than just a memory. God connects us through music.
I love Gloria Gaither’s thoughts on how it will be when we all get Home and hear the whole song God Himself will sing.
He is already singing, every time He looks at you. It is a song of Joy!
He will take great delight in you … He will rejoice over you with singing!
Zephaniah 3:17
Here is the link to Gloria’s song. Think of the day we will all sing together around God’s Throne!
