The Notebook” has been an enduring popular movie.  Throughout the movie, we see an elderly man, reading to his wife from an old notebook.  The wife, now suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, gradually realizes that the couple written about in the notebook is her and her husband.  In a poignant moment, she looks at him in wonder, and says, “It’s us, isn’t it?  It’s us!”

Many times we read the Bible, as if it is about someone else … some other men and women from a time and place far removed from us.  However, when we look a little closer, we find it’s written about us!

Imagine, after all this time, finding Jesus’ old Love Letters to you.  The first is taken from John 14 (The Living Bible).

Let not your heart be troubled.  You are trusting God, now trust in Me.  There are many homes up there where My Father lives, and I am going to prepare them for your coming.  When everything is ready, then I will come and get you, so that you can always be with Me where I am.

If you love Me, obey Me, and I will ask the Father and He will give you another Comforter, and He will never leave you.  He is the Holy Spirit, the Spirit Who leads into all Truth.  The world at large cannot receive Him, for it isn’t looking for Him and doesn’t recognize Him.  But you do, for He lives with you now and some day shall be in you.

No, I will not abandon you or leave you as orphans in the storm — I will come to you.  In just a little while, I will be gone from the world, but I will still be present with you.  For I will live again — and you will too.

When I come back to life again, you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me and I in you.  The One Who obeys Me is the one who loves Me, and because He loves Me, My Father will love Him and I will too, and I will reveal Myself to him.

From John 17 (The Living Bible), we find another “letter”  in which Jesus is talking to His Father about you!  I have changed the pleural “they” and “them” to the personal “she”, so you can hear it as Jesus talking to the Father about you personally.  (And of course, if you are a “he”, change it to “he”.)

I have told her all about You.  She was in the world, but then You gave her to Me.  Actually she was always yours, and You gave her to Me; and she has obeyed you.

Now she knows that everything I have is a Gift from You, for I have passed on to her the Commands You gave Me; and  she accepted them and knows of a certainty that I came down to earth from You, and she believes You sent Me.

My Plea is not for the world, but for this one You have given me because she belongs to You.

Since she is Mine, she belongs to You; and You have given her back to Me with everything else of Yours, and so she is My Glory!

Now I am leaving the world, and leaving her behind and coming to You.  Holy Father, keep her in your own care, so she will be united with the others I love, just as We are.

I have told her many things while I was with her so that she would be filled with My Joy.  I have given her Your Commands.  And the world hates her because she doesn’t fit in with it, just as I don’t.  I’m not asking You to take her out of the world, but to keep her safe from satan’s power.  She is not part of the world any more than I am.

Make her pure and holy through teaching her Your Words of Truth.  As You sent Me into the world, I am sending her into the world, and I consecrate Myself to meet her need for growth in Truth and Holiness.

I am not praying for her alone, but also for the future believers who will come to Me because of her testimony.  My prayer for all of them is that they will be of one heart and mind, just as You and I are, Father — that just as You are in Me and I am in You, so they will be in Us, and the world will believe You sent Me.

I have given them the Glory You gave Me — the glorious unity of being one, as We are — I am them and You in Me, all being perfected into one — so that the world will know You sent Me and will understand that You love them as much as You love Me.

Father, I want them with me — these you’ve give Me — so that they can see My Glory.  You gave Me the Glory because You loved Me before the world began!

O Righteous Father, the world doesn’t know You, but I do, and she knows you sent Me.  And I have revealed You to her and will keep on revealing You, so that the Mighty Love You have for Me may be in her and I in her also.

Fortunately, we do not have to depend upon finding old letters to help us remember Jesus.  He is still here in Person, revealing Himself, just as He Promised!

Be sure of this — I am with you always!

    Wonderfully personal changing the pronoun…
