Seeing God Up Close and Personal!
Moses discovered a strange sight — a bush that was on fire, but did not burn up. Moses decided to take a closer look.
Exodus, Chapter Three, records the story of Moses and the Burning Bush.
When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look,
God called to him from within the bush,
God called Moses by name! It is also interesting to note God put out a sign and waited to see if Moses would respond. God is watching to see how we will respond to Him. Moses showed the characteristics God knew He had created in him.
Moses was observant, willing to get closer and explore something that was clearly out of the ordinary. He was brave! What would you have done? Would you have looked closer?
Moses responded to God’s calling him by name by acknowledging God by Name. Moses did not realize he had called God by Name. But the God within Moses responded to the call of his Creator.
“Here I AM!”
What followed was a conversation in which God further identified Himself and assured Moses He had heard the cries of His people. He told Moses He was there to rescue them. This must have been good news to Moses!
Spectator or In The Game?
However, Moses did not realize the vehicle in which God would be traveling on His Rescue Mission. God planned to work through Moses.
Moses’ response might remind us of our responses. Sometimes we hear God say He will take care of a situation and we jump up and down and go, “Yea, God! Go get them!” And then He says, “Great! I’m riding inside of you. Let’s go!”
Moses said to God,
“Who am I
that I should go to Pharaoh
and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
And God said,
“I will be with you.
And this will be the sign to you
that it is I Who have sent you:
When you have brought the people out of Egypt,
you will worship God on this mountain.”
Moses might have been thinking, “When I have brought the people out??? No way.”
Who Are You?
Moses must have looked at himself and thought of everything he had and did not have. He then thought of God. God was kind of way out there, doing things like producing a fire that did not destroy. But he realized that he did not even know what to call God.
Oh sure, God had told him He was the God of Abraham, The God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. But the real question was God The God of Moses?
Do you ever have those moments when you can see that God speaks to other people and does great things in their life, but you can’t really see the same results in your life? Is God The God of ____? (Fill in your name.)
The way Moses saw it, he was already way out on a limb with the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob … a God Who seemed to be saying He wanted him to go through a public humiliation followed by a certain death. He at least deserved to know more about Who this God was.
I’m sure God was delighted. Even though not in the same words, God was asking Moses the same question as Jesus would later ask His Followers. You remember that same question He is asking you.
“But what about you? Who do you say I am?”
Moses had already spoken God’s Name without knowing it. God was already speaking through Moses’ mouth. Moses had answered God’s call with
“Here I AM!”
Now Moses pushed ahead and asked,
“Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them,
‘The God of your Fathers has sent me to you,’
and they ask me, ‘What is His Name?’
Then what shall I tell them?”
Does this sound a little like Jesus’ conversation with His Followers when He asked them Who others said He was? Moses was asking what to say when others asked about God. He had not yet personalized it to himself. And note, Moses was definitely not signing on the dotted line yet. He was still in the “suppose I go” phase.
Where are you? Are you wondering how to tell others about God? Wondering what words you can use to describe Him? Are you wondering if you should respond to the assignment He has given you? Are you in the “suppose I go” phase or are you praising God and already on your way?
The Keys To The Kingdom!
God’s Answer to Moses was to give him the Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven! Two huge Words that would change the course of Moses’ Life and can change the course of your life!
God said to Moses,
“I AM Who I AM!
This is what you are to say to the Israelites:
‘I AM has sent me to you.”
God also said,
“This is My Name forever,
the Name you shall call Me
from generation to generation!”
How God Releases His Power Through Us!
Isaiah 54:5 says
For your Maker is your husband —
the Lord Almighty is His Name —
the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer;
He is called the God of all the earth!
God is in a Holy Marriage with us. In traditional earth marriages, the bride puts her groom’s name at the end of her name. I, Carolyn Priester, today am known as Carolyn Priester Jones, having added the name of my husband.
In marriage with God, as in all things, His Name goes before our name. So His Name, I AM, is spoken first.
We would never want to disrespect the Name of our Beloved. Therefore, we only follow His Name with things that are true of Him. When we put His Qualities with His Name, they become true for us as well. We are in Him and He is in us!
When we say, “I AM Loving” and we trust that He is the One inside of us making it true, then it becomes true. But we must realize it is He, not we, Who assures His Truth. We cannot make ourselves Loving, but He, The Great I AM, can.
Now let’s add something else. Thanksgiving!
Psalm 95:2 says,
“Let us come into His Presence with thanksgiving!”
Acknowledge your Maker! Feel His Presence! Try it!
I AM so thankful I AM Loving!
Take some time to do a study of the Bible and list every quality of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit you can find. Know that God wants you to have them all! Rejoice!
I AM so thankful I AM peaceful … joyful … protected … and on and on!
Every great leader in the Bible succeeded because at some point they realized they had no power in themselves, but in the Mighty Name of the One Who was inside of them, they had all the Power of the Universe!
Points to Ponder
Take the I AM challenge. What do your Words reveal about your relationship with the Great I AM?
Look around you for signs that God is at work. Stop, turn aside from what you planned to do in the next moments and really look. Praise the Lord for all the things you notice Him doing.
Listen for Him to call you by name. Spend some time near His Fire. Let Him warm you, light your way, and burn away things that hinder you in your walk with Him.
Listen for what He wants to accomplish through you. He is in you and you are in Him. Together you will a lot to accomplish!
