When I was a little girl, my brother gave my parents a very unique Christmas gift. It was a set of ornaments that were supposed to glow in the dark.
The star of this collection was the star. We all waited with great anticipation for the ornaments to kick in and glow.
However, nothing happened. My brother was very disappointed that his gift had bombed.
My mother assured him all the ornaments were lovely in themselves and would be the perfect addition to the tree. He wasn’t so sure.
However, one night the miracle happened. Each ornament seemed to glow! Everyone was delighted.
However, unknown to us, my mother had positioned each ornament close to a light on the tree. They appeared to glow on their own, but it was really the reflection of the lights near them.
Many years later, I became the keeper of the ornaments. Each year when I place them on the tree, I think of the lesson Mother subtly taught us.
In ourselves we can do nothing. We have no light of our own to give to this dark world. But when connected to Jesus, The Light of the world, we can shine. We can light up the darkness!
This year, Jennifer and Gideon placed the star on the top of the tree. It makes me smile as I see it there. And I can imagine my mother smiling too.
Her ornament is on the tree too. Mother is another word for Love!
I am The Light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have The Light of Life.
John 8:12
You are the light of the world. Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven!
Matthew 5:14 and 16
