I recently wrote about trying to stay in gratitude with no ifs, ands or buts.

It sounded good.  I tried.  However, I could not do it.  Even as I was giving gratitude my best shot, I could not deny the reality of loss.

I miss people who are no longer physically in my life.

I miss the body I had even several years ago.  Health issues have significantly impacted the way I used to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday.

We can’t get together with the family we have close by because we are all battling something that is going around and we don’t want to infect each other.

Not only is it tempting to fall into depression, it is also tempting to fall into envy.  I start to feel deprived.  I start wanting what others are having.

Satan has me right where he wants me.  Ungrateful for what I have.  And wanting more.

Fortunately it turns out some BUTs are ok.

My statements of “I am so thankful … BUT …” are  always followed by my wanting more.

Jesus understands.  He does not sugarcoat it.

He said,

“In this world you will have trouble.”

John 16:33

And then He makes the most significant BUT statement anywhere.

He said,

“BUT take heart! I have overcome the world!”

He said,

“I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace.”

John 16:33

“My Peace I give you.”

John 14:27

And that is why, in spite of my BUTs, I am thankful!

Happy Thanksgiving!
