It seems almost prophetic that the longest night of the year comes just before we celebrate the coming of God’s Great Light revealed in Jesus.
God’s desire for His world from the beginning was Light.
When God created the world, the very first thing He did was turn on the lights.
God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness.
Genesis 1:3
And God continued to bring Light in the midst of darkness all down through the ages.
He led the children of Israel by fire in the dark sky at night.
He cut through the darkness and prompted a shepherd boy to exclaim in wonder,
“The heavens declare The Glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His Hands.”
Psalm 19:1
And then on one glorious night, He brought a Light so bright it caused magi to follow its brightness.
They went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.
Matthew 2:9-10
John saw the future world when God will completely eliminate the darkness.
And there will be no night there—no need for lamps or sun—for The Lord God will shine on them. And they will reign forever and ever. Never again will there be any night. No one will need lamplight or sunlight.
Revelation 22:4-5
But in the meantime, there is still darkness. God never intended for us to eliminate the darkness by ourselves. He created each of us to receive our allotment of Light from Him and then together light our world.
If we all did that, together we could light the world!
Jesus said,
“I am The Light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have The Light of Life.”
John 8:12
He also said,
“You are the light of the world. Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Mathew 5:14 and 16
The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
