Jesus said,
Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter The Kingdom of Heaven.
Matthew 18:3
Sometimes when I see our lively five year old grandson, I think, “Yes, it would be a preview of Heaven to be like that again.”
Seeing our grandson with his loving parents seems like Jesus’ living demonstration.
A child sees the world through the eyes of wonder. They are fascinated with everything. Every day is a new adventure.
A child cared for by loving parents trusts them.
When he feels lost, frightened or hurt, he turns to them for comfort.
When he needs help, he asks his parents.
He knows he does not know everything. He does not ask the internet. He asks his parents.
By the same token, he questions things. He is not afraid to ask his parents his favorite word. “Why?”
He thinks very little about the future. He lives in this moment.
He learns to obey. While he likes some explanation, he does not expect lengthy details.
He makes mistakes. His parents lovingly guide him back on the right path. They forgive his missteps. He learns.
He knows his parents’ voice and responds to them even in the dark.
He shows unrestrained delight at being in his parents’ presence.
When he has something to share, he can hardly wait to tell his parents.
He receives hugs and kisses freely from his parents.
He does not worry about being clothed or fed. He knows his parents will provide.
When he gets dirty, he knows his parents will bathe him and give him clean clothes.
He goes to sleep at night with his parents nearby. He never worries about whether he will wake up with them or somewhere else. He knows when he awakens, they will be there.
Children are our best example of how to enter The Kingdom of Heaven. If we followed their example and related to our Heavenly Father in the same way, we would get a preview of that Kingdom.
