When I was little, it seemed like an eternity between each Christmas and birthday.
Now that I am older, it seems time has sped up. It seems like we just took the Christmas decorations down and it’s time to put them up again.
And birthdays, oh dear, I hardly have time to adjust to being another year older when another birthday arrives.
Many people believe we can’t begin the race to Christmas until after Thanksgiving. But once the race is on, there are daily (sometimes more like hourly) shots of adrenalin given that stir the thoughts of how many more days are left before Christmas.
It almost seems like warning shots that if we don’t do something tradition says we are supposed to do by the time tradition says we are supposed to do it, we are less than good human beings.
We fail. We disappoint. We start to believe anyone who ever told us we were a disorganized mess who could never meet a deadline.
Also when there is so much hype about getting to one day, if that one day for us does not measure up to the hype, we feel disappointed, depressed, and yes, maybe angry.
Christmas was supposed to be magical, but it isn’t.
Even if it turns out ok, we may experience a little post Christmas depression. Whether we are thinking about the holidays we just celebrated or the year that looms out before us, we think “Is that all there is?”
Give yourself a Gift this year. Don’t fall into the holiday time trap. There is nothing magical about any certain holiday.
Anything can be celebrated at any time. You do not have to wait.
You do not have to stop celebrating because tradition says it’s over.
And as to gift giving, try abandoning the notion your gifts have to be limited to a season. Surprise someone with a gift at a time other than when it is expected.
Help others realize the freedom of living life without the walls that get embedded in calendars and become prisons. Today is a good day to begin any celebration. Why?
