Christmas is the time when we focus on the birth of Jesus. When I was little, I wondered why we got older every year on our birthday, but Jesus seemed to always go back to being a baby.
As I got older, I heard adults talking about being “born again.” I figured this must have something to do with why Jesus returned to being a baby every Christmas.
Then, I became an adult. In studying The Bible, I found Jesus said we must be born again. I wondered what was up with that.
I was sort of like Nicodemus, the teacher of the law. When he heard Jesus say we must be born again, he asked,
“How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
John 3:4
Jesus answered him.
“Unless one is born of water and The Spirit, he cannot enter The Kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of The Spirit is Spirit.”
John 3:5-6
While there are various interpretations of what Jesus meant in His reference to water, He may have been comparing the two ways we are born.
We were born after our mother’s “water broke.” We were born of water.
But Jesus wanted us to know we are much more than our physical bodies. We were spirit before we had a physical body and we will remain spirit, even after we no longer have a physical body.
In being born of The Spirit, we share the unique “pregnancy” situation God demonstrated in Jesus. We are in Him and He is in us.
God designed us to stay inside Him and grow enough of Him to deliver Him into the view of the world.
And do it over and over again.
Perpetually fed and nourished by Him and delivered again and again in His Love. Being born again in The Spirit is not a one time event or badge to wear.
Being born again in God’s Spirit is an ongoing, renewing celebration of God with us.
So, as we celebrate Jesus’ birth, let us truly celebrate Him and our being born again in Him!

On that day you will realize that I am in My Father, and you are in Me, and I am in you.
John 14:20
