Today we consider the interesting topic of how heavenly and earthly bodies communicate.
I am not talking about seances, which are listed as one of the things that are forbidden in The Bible.
But I do believe we can communicate with those who now have heavenly bodies. They are not the dead. They are not spooky ghosts. They are the living.
Jesus in referring to those who had already been promoted to heaven said,
“God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
Matthew 22:32
We are living. Those who have been promoted to heaven are living. We are just wearing different bodies. They are still present with us, but we have to learn to see them in a new way.
In fact, that may be part of our basic training for a coming Heavenly time when we will communicate spirit to spirit without visual or auditory cues.
So have the dearly departed really departed? The Bible gives us some interesting clues to consider.
When asked about how marriages would work in Heaven, Jesus said the marriage human relationship would be no more.
He was not taking Love out of the equation, but simply indicating there would be so much more for us than an earthly legal contract.
But in explaining that new relationship, Jesus said we would be “like the angels in heaven.”
Matthew 22:30
Many have assumed He was just talking about the marriage relationship. We do not become angels when we die, but if we will be “like angels,” we could conceivably come and go between heaven and earth.
Jacob had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
Genesis 28:12
If that is the case, then our dearly departed have not departed! While we only have access to earth, they may now have access to both Heaven and earth.
I believe they can see us. Paul was comforted by the thought of the “great clouds of witnesses” watching him on his earth journey.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.
Hebrews 12:1-2
Jesus Himself is going with us on our earth journey. He can easily access both Heaven and earth. He is our Connection between Heaven and earth.
Besides that, Paul says Jesus is the Perfector of our faith.
And what is faith? Assurance of what we know is there, but no longer see with our physical eyes.
Paul said,
Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.
Hebrews 11:1
And Jesus, The Perfecter of our faith, is going to help us have that reality. He is going to give us the evidence of what we cannot see!
How does this work? Go back and read or listen to my last blog post about how our brains allow us to bring things to life through memory.
Remember, the more we are exposed to a thought, the stronger the connection becomes in the brain.
The more times we remember our loved ones, the more we “see” them and “hear” them. When multiple people share memories, the connection becomes even stronger.
Jesus specifically asked His Disciples to remember Him. He knew if they thought of Him regularly, they would see Him in their spirits.
In fact, He assured them they would see Him.
He said,
“The world will not see Me anymore, but you will see Me.”
John 14:19
Even more exciting than being like angels is the knowledge that in Heaven, we will be like Jesus.
We are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him because we will see Him as He is.
1 John 3:2
And if we are like Jesus, then we will be able to be even closer than coming down from Heaven on a ladder.
Jesus is actually inside us. So when you talk to your promoted loved ones, know they are not far away at all. They, like Jesus, are inside you!
You are in Me and I am in you!
